Before you begin your plan for planting your Angel Garden Grotto or Flower Bed, you can learn more about flowers and their spiritual and emotional meanings. visit our Flowers and Their Meanings page.

You will easily find several flowers to grow in youir gardens to honor and attract angels, and combine those with their nature counterparts in the garden - fairies and woods spirits, who are co-habitate gardens, according to Garden Folklore..

An Angel Garden is not a specific garden design. Designs are unique and personal to the keeper of the garden. And it's not a New Age or Metaphysical "Thing". I tire of hearing that. The Angel Garden is similar in its intent and planning to designing Meditation Gardens and Zen Gardens. The concept is the same - a safe refuge to escape things that are stifling your individuality or creativity, or messing with your inner harmony. A place to try to reason it all out and deal with it after thoughtful reflection and/or medittion. Angels are described in the Bible, in human visitation stories and in folklore as beautiful and pure beings, and they represent healing, comfort, guidance and protection.

It's really about nurturing and growing very fragrant and beautiful flowers, and using angel statuary and Nature's symbolism to create a peaceful refuge for yourself for when things get tough. Symbolism to help you focus. If you already make use of altars indoors for meditation and prayer, the concept's the same, except you need to do nothing but absorb the goodness and quiet of your protected outdoor environment, and be open to messages that might lead you to an answer.

It can be a small place you visit in the garden that uplifts you daily, or it can be a place you visit only to mourn and heal. If you choose the right items to inhabit the garden, you will find it to be a very nice place to unwind, slow down, and listen to your heart daily. The decor has to be personal to you, the style and types of decorative items have to suit your personality and the feeling you want to evoke and leave with.

In almost all of my design plants, the first step is that garden bench, tucked away somewhere, and then get down to the gardening part. You can do all types of plants in pots or containers, or raised beds, or hidden secret garden areas that only you know are there. By personalized, i mean that you can use cherubs or adult angels, and symbolism important and personal to you. I'm not a cherub type. But i have a couple in a different area of the garden. I don't want the ultra-religious message, but i do want a spiritual and healing message. You'll know it when you see it - the perfect plantings and pieces for all areas of your garden. The Angel Garden would be full of flowers.. Mostly perennial plants and a shrub or two, but no trees unless they're grown in pots as a frame around the garden. Small and medium-sized perennial and bulbs that bloom on a rotating basis are perfect. And so are wildflowers.

Plant flowers and small, creeping plants like delicate ivy and flowering sages that grow in your region, and grow some flowers that have "Angel" as part of their common or variety names.

Here is a list of several plants with "Angel" names get your garden plan started.

-Check the USDA Hardiness Map for your area.
-Choose mostly perennials, and those plants that are most fragrant, choose a pastel or cool color palette.
-Choose by sun or shade and watering requirements.
-Remember to study the size of the plants at maturity, to know where they should be planted in a bed or garden....
And that's where adding container gardening, elevated raised beds, urban garden and trellising ideas really shine in this design.

When you begin to plan an Angel Garden Design, you can choose to grow an Herbal Angel Garden or combine the two,
for spiritual and physical healing purposes. or combine it with a sacred Mary Garden, or as part of a Biblical Garden
Combine it with a bird sanctuary and include St. Francis and St. Fiacre statuary and feeders. Do whatever feels the most
healing to you while you're in it, considering the amount of space and time you have to enjoy and tend to it.
Big or small, it's a sacred sanctuary designed and planted just for you and the elements of nature whom you invite in.
